Lustre – Pearling & Australia is an extensive high quality exhibition that explores the gritty human story of pearling. It weaves together intersecting strands of Aboriginal, Asian and European histories to reveal insights into one of Australia’s oldest industries.
Originally produced by NBY and the WA Maritime Museum, the exhibition is now travelling and can be see in Sydney at the National Maritime Museum until April 18, 2017. It was launched at the WA Maritime Museum in 2015, and was also on display at the Melbourne National Immigration Museum in 2016.
Broome is synonymous with the pearling industry and many local families have connections and histories. But Lustre weaves its stories across the whole top end of Australia and into other towns, exploring the long history and different uses of pearls, pearl shells and the people how fished for them
