This year is the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Referendum which was a landmark event for the inclusion of Aboriginal people in the Australian nation.
In honour of this significant event in our nation’s history, Yawuru and the Shire of Broome are hosting the exhibition “Beyond the Common Gate”.
Building upon the original “Opening the Common Gate” exhibition from 2007, this exhibition looks at Broome’s history of social and racial exclusion and how the town and the whole nation has changed in the last 50 years since 1967.
